Chickens

In early May of 2019, we got our first chickens - 5 bantams picked up from our local supply store. Two weeks later, we decided that 5 wasn't enough and returned to our supply store for 5 standard sized chickens and 3 Polish.

Our Goals

At the moment our goals for our chickens are simply to keep them alive for eggs and hopefully hatch out a few new generations. In the future, we would love to have one of those absolutely gorgeous rainbow egg backyard flocks as well as raise a few specific breeds.

Our Flock

Please note, not all the chickens have names yet so only the named ones are listed.

Darkness

Cochin Bantam Rooster
"Hello darkness, my old friend …"
The second chicken to get a name (the first being Ice Cream), he was the first one that we knew for sure was a rooster. Pictures don't do him justice, he has gorgeous iridescent black feathers that gleam. He's the first to come running when he hears voices and we're desperately hoping that he doesn't get aggressive as he ages.

Ice Cream

Cochin Bantam Hen
Ice Cream was the first chicken to have a name, one of the few to be named when she was still a chick. She's an adorable and shy little girl, usually found hanging out close to Darkness.

Hawkgirl

Mille Fleur d'Uccle Hen
A gorgeous hen, we love watching her strut around. Although not exactly friendly, she's not adverse to being carried around and just makes herself comfortable with any handling when she is caught. She's the smallest of the flock and her stature just adds to her cute factor.

Thing 1 & Thing 2

White Crested Blue Polish
Also known as "The Twins" so don't ask which is which. These two are never seen too far from one another and are often off in their own mini flock away from the rest of the chickens. When it comes time for bed, at least one of them (and usually both) are the last to go in and often need to be rounded up and chased into the coop.

Road Runner

Silver Laced Polish
A funky looking chicken that in his/her awkward adolescent stage vaguely resembled a roadrunner at first glance (hence the name).
